David White, a former patient, now inspires others as a volunteer in a rehabilitation ward

Rogerstone: Let me tell you about David White. He’s a former patient who’s turned into an amazing volunteer at a rehab ward. After suffering a serious brain injury in 2020 from a fall, he’s really come a long way.
David had a tough time. He fractured his skull during a paintballing trip and ended up in a coma. After several surgeries at the University Hospital of Wales, he faced a long recovery. He had to relearn basic things like walking and using his left arm.
But here’s the inspiring part: instead of just focusing on his recovery, David decided to give back. He volunteers at University Hospital Llandough, helping others who are going through similar struggles.
He’s become a real source of hope for many patients. David organizes fun activities, like a recent pizza and movie night, where Domino’s donated the pizzas. How cool is that?
During the holidays, he also brought Christmas gifts and advent calendars to brighten up the season for patients. Plus, he started an online support group called NeuroBuds for those dealing with brain and spinal injuries.
David shared that his experience has motivated him to help others facing tough times. He said, “Volunteering has allowed me to help, support, and communicate with both patients and their families in a unique way.”
His hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The health board staff at the rehab ward have praised his dedication. Jordann Rowley from the voluntary services said they never expected David to put in so much effort.
David is excited to keep volunteering on West 10 Ward. His journey is a true testament to resilience and the power of giving back.
