Halifax: An Air Canada plane had a scary moment on Saturday night when it caught fire while trying to land at the airport. It was around 9:30 p.m. when Flight 2259 skidded down the runway, and part of the aircraft went up in flames. This caused a bit of chaos, shutting down airport operations for about 90 minutes.

One passenger, Nikki Valentine, described the scene, saying the plane shook a lot, and they could see fire on the left side. Smoke started coming in through the windows, which must have been terrifying. Passengers even shared videos showing dramatic flames shooting from the wing as the plane scraped along the runway.

According to Air Canada’s spokesperson, the plane had a suspected landing gear issue. It couldn’t make it to the terminal, so everyone had to be bused away. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported among the 73 passengers and crew, although there were some minor injuries noted by the RCMP.

In a related incident, a PAL flight from St. John’s also faced landing gear failure but managed to evacuate everyone safely. All incoming flights were diverted to other airports, and Halifax Airport was temporarily closed. Fortunately, one of the runways has since reopened, and things are getting back to normal.

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as there have been several serious aviation events recently, including a tragic crash in South Korea that took 179 lives and another crash in Kazakhstan on Christmas Day.
