Brighton: So, there’s some buzz about a new park and ride scheme in Brighton and Hove. If the council gives it the green light, we could see it up and running this summer.

Next week, the cabinet will chat about the options at a town hall meeting. They’re looking at using current car parks and bus routes to kick things off.

The council has been in talks with landowners and big car park operators. They’re hoping to share where the new scheme will be set up soon.

They’ve also asked the Department for Transport for some cash from their Bus Service Improvement Plan to help get the tech sorted for the park and ride.

Plus, they’ve secured funding from Transport for the South East to cover the costs of a business case for a future purpose-built scheme. This would work alongside a new flexible model they’re recommending.

If it all goes through, the park and ride will let drivers park in existing spaces and then hop on a bus into the city center.

Other places like Oxford and Portsmouth have done similar things, which helps support the idea of a dedicated scheme here.

They’re also planning to develop tech for ticketing, payments, journey planning, and signage to make everything smoother.

Once it’s up and running, the council can look at expanding the model to other areas in the city.

Labour councillor Trevor Muten, who’s in charge of transport and parking, is pretty excited about it. He thinks this could be a fantastic scheme.

After years of talks, he believes 2025 could be the year they finally get park and ride going in the city.

They want to use existing car parks to set it up in time for summer. Once it’s established, they’ll monitor it and make improvements before rolling it out to other parts of Brighton.

This plan fits in with their goals to make parking easier, expand electric vehicle charging, and improve walking and cycling options in the city.

It’s all part of a bigger strategy to give everyone more sustainable travel options.
