Parents Rally Again for New Welsh Medium School in Cardiff
Parents in Cardiff are urging the council to establish a new Welsh-medium school to improve access to education for their children

Cardiff: Parents are getting pretty frustrated. They’re driving all over the place just to get their kids to a Welsh-medium school. So, they gathered outside County Hall again to push for a new school. They want the city council to step up and give them some clear answers about better Welsh-medium education options.
This isn’t the first time they’ve done this. They visited County Hall a couple of times last year, once to hand over a letter asking for a new school and again to voice their concerns. Many parents are dealing with long drives to Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf, which is super popular and hard to get into.
During their latest visit, they even celebrated the old Welsh new year, hen galan, to make their point. Carl Morris, a spokesperson for the group, mentioned that the council hinted at the possibility of a fourth school, but they need a solid plan to make it happen. They’re really stressing that time is of the essence.
They believe that Huw Thomas and his team will come up with a smart plan for a new Welsh-medium secondary school in the south of Cardiff. Last November, the council said they’re committed to promoting bilingual education and are working on making a fourth school a reality.
However, parents are still feeling the pinch. They argue that the current setup is unfair since all three existing Welsh-medium secondary schools are located north of the A48, making it tough for families in the south. They feel the council isn’t doing enough to support the growth of Welsh-medium education.
Mr. Morris added that they plan to hold an open debate about the school’s future. He pointed out that Cardiff has never built a new Welsh-medium secondary school, and it’s high time for a change. They want fair access to education for all kids in the city.
A spokesperson from Cardiff Council reassured everyone that they’re dedicated to bilingual education and are working on a plan to make a fourth school viable. They noted that the number of students in Welsh-medium schools has grown significantly over the years, and they’re open to discussions about the challenges ahead.
