York, Harrowells Solicitors, Fraud, Jordan Calpin, UK
York: A paralegal named Jordan Calpin, 30, worked at Harrowells Solicitors. He resigned last year after being caught stealing money.
Calpin had been a paralegal for 11 years. He used a client’s bank card without permission.
The firm had power of attorney for a client. A card was issued in a senior solicitor’s name.
Calpin took money on six occasions, stealing a total of £960. He pleaded guilty to six fraud charges.
His defense lawyer said Calpin faced consequences outside court, like losing his job and reputation.
Calpin stopped stealing months before he was caught. He felt guilty about his actions.
He received a 12-month community order and must complete 100 hours of unpaid work. He also has to pay court costs.
When the firm discovered the theft, they refunded the client. Calpin also paid back the firm.
He took amounts between £80 and £250 from June to September 2023.
In Spring 2024, the client noticed strange transactions and alerted the firm.
The firm contacted the police and started an investigation. Calpin admitted his actions and was suspended.
He resigned shortly after a disciplinary hearing. His lawyer said he was remorseful.
Calpin faced financial issues in 2023, which led to his poor decision. He has since sought help from his parents.
He has repaid the stolen money and found a new job outside the legal field.
