York: There’s a bit of a stir going on in York right now. Locals are really anxious about a proposed tourist tax that they think could backfire big time.
This historic city, known for its beautiful architecture and rich culture, is thinking about this tax to help fund its attractions. Sounds good, right? But folks are worried it might make things worse.
So, what’s a tourist tax? It’s basically a fee for travelers who stay overnight. The idea is to use that money to keep the city’s attractions in shape and promote tourism. Cities like Barcelona and Paris have been doing this for a while.
Last year, York welcomed around nine million visitors, with about 1.7 million staying overnight. The tax could bring in a lot of cash, but many locals fear it might make York less appealing and more expensive.
Andy Barnsdale, who runs a hotel near the station, shared his concerns. He said adding another cost could push visitors away and hurt the already struggling hospitality scene.
On the flip side, Paul Helmsley from a guesthouse said he wouldn’t mind the tax if the money is used wisely for the city. He just wants to see where the funds go.
A spokesperson from the Hospitality Association York mentioned that discussions about this tax have been going on for a year, but nothing has really moved forward. They’re worried that any extra costs could hurt York’s competitiveness as a tourist spot, which isn’t good for the local economy.
