Lahore: So, Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, just got hit with a 14-year prison sentence for corruption. It’s a tough break for him, especially since he’s already been in jail for over 18 months and is dealing with a ton of other cases.
Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were found guilty of snagging some prime land through a shady deal with a big-time property developer. He got 14 years, while she received seven, plus a fine of about 1 million rupees, which is roughly £2,900.
The court that made this ruling was set up right inside the prison where Khan has been held since his arrest back in August 2023. His wife was taken into custody right after the verdict was announced, which is pretty wild.
Despite all this, Khan still has a huge following in Pakistan. He claims these charges are just a political witch hunt aimed at keeping him from power. He was in charge from 2018 until 2022 but lost his position after falling out with the military, which is a big deal in Pakistan.
After his arrest, he faced a mountain of charges, including some serious ones like murder and terrorism. He’s been convicted in a few cases, but many of those were later overturned. Still, he’s stuck in prison with over 100 cases hanging over his head.
Khan’s party called this ruling a “black day” for justice in Pakistan, saying it shows how the courts aren’t really independent. One of his advisers, Zulfi Bukhari, mentioned they plan to appeal the decision, claiming the judge wasn’t credible at all.
Bukhari also said this situation feels like undeclared martial law, where those in power can twist the justice system to silence their opponents. Khan, on the other hand, is staying strong, insisting he won’t make any deals to get out of jail. He’s all about fighting for justice and democracy in Pakistan.
The case revolves around Malik Riaz, a major player in Pakistan’s property scene. The charges suggest Khan and his wife made a deal with him, trading land for some serious cash laundering. It’s a messy situation, to say the least.
Recently, there were whispers about PTI members meeting with military leaders, but Khan made it clear he’s not interested in any backdoor deals. He’s standing firm, saying that those who oppose dictatorship face the consequences.
