Pontypridd, Wales, Kayleigh Cornwell, Jason Morgan, Road Traffic Collision
Kayleigh Cornwell and Jason Morgan, both 32, were struck by a Ford Focus driven by Jonathan Owens on January 27, 2023. Despite the quick response from emergency services, they were pronounced dead at the scene.
An inquest revealed that Kayleigh had a tough upbringing and had moved to South Wales to start anew. Unfortunately, she struggled with alcohol and drug issues. Her stepmother shared that Kayleigh’s life took a downward turn due to family problems.
Jason, on the other hand, had faced his own challenges, including ADHD and a history of drug dependency. His mother mentioned that he was trying to turn his life around before this tragic event.
On the night before the accident, Jason had been with Kayleigh and a friend, Leon Cole. They had been drinking and took the wrong bus. After realizing their mistake, they got off and ended up in the road.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the pair zig-zagging in and out of traffic. Despite warnings from bystanders, they didn’t seem to grasp the danger they were in.
When the collision occurred, it was reported that Jason was kneeling in the road while Kayleigh was lying down. The driver, Jonathan Owens, said he didn’t see them until it was too late. He was driving within the speed limit, but the impact was unavoidable.
The coroner concluded that both individuals were intoxicated, which significantly impaired their judgment and contributed to the tragic accident. It was a devastating reminder of how quickly things can go wrong, especially when substances are involved.
