Oxford: Generous people often raise money for local hospitals. They help staff and patients with their efforts.
Oxford Mail photographers captured many joyful moments when donations were made. Well-wishers handed over cash and gifts to support the cause.
In one event, male and female footballers raised £1,000 for the special care baby unit at John Radcliffe Hospital. They played a fancy dress match in 1989 at Nine Acres pitch in Charlbury.
The women had 21 players, while the men had just 10. The match ended in a tie, but the women won in penalties.
Staff from Midland Bank, now HSBC, pushed a bed eight miles and raised over £3,500. They donated a rocking chair for the high-dependency unit at Radcliffe Infirmary.
In 1986, patient Brian Davis tried out the bed while hospital and bank staff watched. Children at ABC cinema also contributed by donating £59.29 to the special care baby unit.
Though the fundraising method wasn’t recorded, the kids were thrilled with their achievement. Seven-year-old Gemma Davies from Cowley donated her handcrafted dolls house in 1989.
She wanted to thank the unit for caring for her uncle. The dolls house was to be raffled at a country and western evening to help buy an incubator.
In 1950, ABC Cinemas donated two second-hand projector heads to the X-ray department at Churchill Hospital for research purposes.
