Newry: So, there’s been a bit of a stir over the Mourne Windfarm project. The public inquiry has been pushed back because more than 4,000 people have raised their voices against it. Can you believe that?

ABO Wind NI Ltd wants to set up eight turbines and a substation in Hilltown, Co Down. They were all set to have the inquiry in March, but now it’s been moved to September. Apparently, the Planning Appeals Commission is feeling the pressure and needs more time.

At a recent council meeting, a local councillor, Jarlath Tinnelly, brought up the inquiry. He was curious if the council would have a say in it, especially since they had previously shown opposition to the project.

It’s not just a few complaints either. There’s a massive collective objection from residents and environmentalists who are worried about turning the beautiful Mournes into a “forest of steel.” They’re really passionate about keeping the area’s natural beauty intact.

ABO Wind NI Ltd did get in touch with the Local Democracy Reporting Service for comments. They mentioned they have several projects in the works across Northern Ireland and Scotland, but they need to keep investing in the grid to make it all work.

They’ve got until June to present their case to the Planning Appeals Commission. Meanwhile, a council officer noted that the council had previously asked for public consultation on the project, which is why this inquiry is happening now.

It seems like the council hasn’t taken a firm stance on whether they support or oppose the wind farm yet. It’s all still up in the air!
