Some of the funds will create walking, jogging, and cycling paths in five parks. They’ll also set up health-focused walking routes in six parks.
Plus, they’re sprucing up some parks. Old benches will be replaced, and the wooden walkway at Moses Gate will be fixed up. Railings will also get a fresh coat of paint.
New gym stations are coming to several parks. Ainsworth Avenue and Horwich will have two stations. Tonge Park and Queen’s Park will each get four.
Farnworth Park will have two, while Westhoughton Central Park will have four. Wingates in Westhoughton will see three, and Great Lever Park will have three too. Egerton Park in Bromley Cross will also get three.
They’re using area forum ward funding for gym equipment at Astley Bridge Park. The gym gear costs about £250,000.
The investment in play areas is impressive too. Moss Bank Park will receive £100,000, Leverhulme Park will get £60,000, and Westhoughton Central Park will see £50,000. Ashfield Park in Halliwell will get £40,000.
In total, £686,000 will be spent on play areas soon. The money comes from a £700,000 allocation from the 2024/25 council budget, along with funds from developers and external sources.
However, opposition leader Martyn Cox expressed frustration. He said it’s disappointing how long it took to decide where to spend the money. He believes it shouldn’t take a year to use a relatively small amount.
Cox emphasized the need for quicker systems. He said leaving money unspent doesn’t help the economy. It’s time to wake up those funds and put them to good use!
