Elkhart: Organizers are gearing up for some meaningful events to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They’ve got a lineup that’s sure to inspire the community.
The first event is a special awards ceremony called “40 Under 40 Rising Stars of Elkhart County.” It’s happening on Saturday, January 18, at Hotel Elkhart. This event is all about recognizing young African Americans making a difference in the community.
Robert Taylor, the president of the Elkhart Chapter of Indiana Black Expo, shared that this event reflects what Dr. King stood for. It’s about highlighting those who are positively impacting Elkhart County.
On Monday, January 20, the city will kick off the day with a traditional breakfast at the Elkhart Public Library. It starts at 8 a.m. and will feature a live choir from local churches. Sounds like a great way to start the day!
After breakfast, there’s a march at 9 a.m. from Elkhart Civic Plaza to Community Missionary Baptist Church. City Council President Arvis Dawson mentioned they’ll have a prayer before the march, which is a nice touch.
At the church, there will be a program featuring guest speaker Dana Freeman, who has an inspiring story. The focus is on youth, helping them understand the significance of this day.
Following the march, there’s an annual MLK program at 10 a.m. at the church, and lunch will be served afterward. It’s a great way for the community to come together.
Taylor and Dawson emphasized that these events are about celebrating Dr. King’s vision and fostering community spirit. It’s a reminder that MLK Day is not just a day off but a day of service.
Later on Monday, the Tolson Center and Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary will host an event called “Art for a Change!” from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Tolson Center. It’s free and open to everyone.
This event will explore how art has played a role in social change, especially during the Civil Rights Movement. It’s a chance for people to engage with art and its impact on society.
There will also be a screening of a documentary about the Benham West neighborhood, which highlights the stories of the community. It’s a significant part of Elkhart’s history.
Participants can enjoy performances from the Tolson Choir and Dance Team, showcasing the talent of local youth. Plus, there will be art sessions for kids to express their dreams for the community.
