Brisbane: So, Peter Dutton is making some waves with his latest election promise. He’s saying he won’t address the nation as prime minister while standing next to Indigenous flags. He thinks it just causes division.
He’s been pretty consistent about this, showing up without the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags in the background. Dutton believes Australia should stick to one national flag, claiming that having multiple flags just divides us.
On Sky News, he mentioned that while we should respect the Indigenous flags, they aren’t our national flags. He’s calling out Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for trying to please everyone, saying we need to stand firm on our values.
Dutton insists that unity comes from gathering under one flag, especially on Australia Day. This promise comes right after Coalition Indigenous Australians spokeswoman Jacinta Nampijinpa Price suggested cutting back on Welcome to Country ceremonies, which she sees as a commercialization of culture.
Since taking office in 2022, the Albanese government has been pushing for more First Nations representation, including the failed Voice referendum aimed at advising parliament on Indigenous issues. It’s a complex situation, especially considering Indigenous Australians face significant challenges, like high incarceration rates and shorter life expectancies.
