Olton: A heartbreaking accident happened in Hale County. An elderly couple, Robert and Mary Dennis, lost their lives when their pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer.

The crash took place on Saturday evening around 4:58 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 and FM 179. Sadly, both Robert, 96, and Mary, 89, were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Robert was driving their 2022 Chevrolet pickup when he turned left onto U.S. 70 without yielding to the oncoming tractor-trailer.

The truck, a 1997 Peterbilt, hit the driver’s side of their pickup. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 26-year-old from Elmore City, Oklahoma, thankfully wasn’t hurt. It seems he and Mary were wearing seatbelts, but Robert wasn’t.

At the time of the crash, the weather was clear and dry. Investigators are still looking into what else might have contributed to this tragic event.
