Oldham: Late on Saturday night, a nurse was attacked while working in the A&E department. It’s a pretty shocking situation.
The nurse, who’s in her 50s, was at Royal Oldham Hospital when she suffered what’s being called “life-changing” injuries. A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and thankfully, the police say they’re not looking for anyone else.
Details are still a bit fuzzy, but it seems the attacker didn’t use a knife. Instead, they used some kind of “sharp implement.” It sounds like the whole thing might have started because the patient was frustrated with the wait in A&E. Despite this, the hospital is still running as usual today.
The NHS trust is understandably shaken up. Heather Caudle, the chief nursing officer, expressed how shocked and saddened everyone is. They’re focusing on supporting the nurse and her family during this tough time.
All services at the hospital are open, which is a relief. Heather also mentioned that they’re thinking of the staff and patients who witnessed the incident, as it must have been really distressing for them.
Amanda Pritchard, the Chief Executive of NHS England, shared her shock on social media, saying her thoughts are with the nurse and her loved ones. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved.
Detective Sergeant Craig Roters from Greater Manchester Police said this is a serious incident, and they’re doing everything they can to support the nurse’s family and colleagues. They’re also increasing police presence in the area to reassure the community.
Politicians are weighing in too. Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed his concern for the nurse and emphasized that nurses should be able to do their jobs without fear of violence. It’s a tough reminder of the challenges faced by healthcare workers.
