Cinderford: A playgroup in Gloucestershire just got a fantastic review from Ofsted. St John’s Playgroup is now rated “Good.” Inspectors praised the friendly staff and the positive atmosphere that helps kids feel safe and independent.

Kids start their day with a fun wake-up song. They dance, stretch, and sing about their feelings. This helps boost their emotional well-being and self-esteem. The playgroup serves children aged two to four and currently has 42 kids enrolled.

Since the last inspection in March 2024, the playgroup has made great improvements. The curriculum builds on what kids already know, helping them progress and prepare for future learning. Leaders have made changes to the learning environment and improved staff training.

Staff have received training in communication and storytelling. However, the report suggests they could ask more open-ended questions to help kids express themselves better. Independence is encouraged, with children taking responsibility for their belongings and asking for help when needed.

Parents have shared positive feedback about the care their children receive. The playgroup also hosts community events, like visits from local farmers with animals, enriching the kids’ experiences.

St John’s Playgroup is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s managed by a committee and has nine staff members, seven of whom are qualified at Level 3.
