London: Octopus Energy has a warning for UK households. If you have an old electricity meter, you need to act fast. Otherwise, you might get cut off.
They say anyone with a radio teleswitch meter (RTS) must upgrade soon. These meters will stop working in June this year.
RTS meters have been around since the 1980s. They use longwave radio signals from the BBC to switch between peak and off-peak rates.
But the signal equipment is nearly obsolete. It will be switched off on June 30, affecting about 600,000 customers.
If you don’t upgrade, you could lose heating and hot water. You might also face higher energy bills when the system shuts down.
If you use electricity for heating or hot water, you might have an RTS meter. Look for a large black box next to your meter.
Octopus Energy is speeding up upgrades for its customers. They’re covering nearly a quarter of affected households and sending more engineers to help.
Switching to a smart meter has many benefits. You’ll get better insights into your energy use and access to smart tariffs.
John Szymik, CEO of Octopus Energy Services, urges customers to book their meter exchange now. They want to ensure no one is left without heating.
Smart meters are key for the energy transition. They help customers control their energy use and costs.
Octopus is also giving RTS customers a free Octopus Home Mini. This device connects to your smart meter and shows real-time energy usage and costs.
