Tragic Death of NZ Officer in ‘Senseless’ Car Attack

Nelson: A tragic incident unfolded on New Year’s Day when a veteran police officer was killed. Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming, who had dedicated 28 years to the force, was patrolling with a colleague when they were hit by a speeding car.
It all happened just after 2 a.m. Both officers were critically injured and rushed to the hospital. Sadly, Sergeant Fleming didn’t make it, while her partner, Sergeant Adam Ramsay, is now stable and recovering.
Two civilians were also caught up in the chaos, along with another police officer. The driver, just 32 years old, has been charged with multiple offenses, including murder. Police Commissioner Richard Chambers called the attack “completely unprovoked.”
He shared how deeply the loss of Sergeant Fleming would be felt in the community and among her colleagues. She was known as a beautiful soul who worked hard to keep people safe, especially on a night meant for celebration.
Flowers have been laid in her memory, and the community is in shock. The incident took place at Buxton Square, not far from the police station. It’s a grim reminder of the dangers police face daily.
Since 1980, 33 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty in New Zealand. The last was Constable Matthew Hunt, who was shot during a traffic stop in 2020.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed his condolences, calling it a devastating day for the police and the nation. A minute of silence was observed at a cricket match in Nelson to honor her memory.
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the senselessness of this tragedy.
