Nauru: So, there’s a bit of a showdown happening in Australia over border security. Labor and the Coalition are really going at it after a spike in asylum seekers at the offshore processing center.
It’s wild because the number of detainees was zero back in July 2023, but by the end of November, it shot up to 101. The Coalition is pointing fingers, saying it’s all due to less aerial surveillance.
But Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke is pushing back hard. He claims there’s been no drop in surveillance and says the opposition’s James Paterson is just embarrassed about the previous government’s failures.
Burke even mentioned that the previous government’s contractor didn’t deliver on a lot of their missions, which is pretty shocking. They were charging taxpayers for flights that never happened!
He said, “For many years now, every people smuggling venture has failed.” Sounds like he’s really confident in the current strategy.
On the flip side, Senator Paterson insists that aerial patrols have indeed dropped. He’s got some numbers to back it up, saying patrol days and surveillance hours have taken a hit since Labor took over.
He’s not holding back, saying, “The numbers don’t lie.” He’s pointing out that there have been attempts to reach Australia, and some have even succeeded.
Paterson believes only a Coalition government can really tighten up border security again. It’s a heated debate, and it looks like it’s going to keep going for a while!
