Brisbane: A lot of people are talking about NRL player Ezra Mam and his recent penalty for drug driving. It’s stirred up quite a bit of controversy, and now the Queensland government is thinking about changing some laws.
So, here’s what happened. Mam was driving under the influence of drugs, including cocaine, and ended up in a head-on crash. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt, but the magistrate really laid into him for his reckless behavior.
He got fined $850 and had his license suspended for six months, but no criminal record was made. That’s where the outrage comes in. Many feel that’s way too lenient for someone who could have caused a lot of harm.
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie didn’t hold back, calling the penalty a “slap on the wrist.” He and Attorney-General Deb Frecklington both expressed that the punishment seems lighter than what someone would get for using a phone while driving.
Frecklington mentioned that she’d be looking into possible changes to the laws, saying it just doesn’t sit right with most people. Mam, who recently signed a big contract with the Broncos, is now facing the possibility of an NRL ban as well.
He’s already admitted he messed up and is feeling remorseful. It’s a tough situation, and it’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds and if it leads to stricter laws in the future.
