Northumbria: The police were busy this festive season. They teamed up with the National Police Chiefs’ Council for a month-long operation from December 1 to January 1.

Officers ramped up their patrols and stopped more vehicles than usual. They caught a total of 175 drivers, which is quite a lot.

Among those arrested, 98 were driving under the influence of alcohol, while 39 were on drugs. There were also 35 drivers deemed unfit due to either alcohol or drugs, and three who failed to provide a sample.

Sergeant Glen Robson from the Road Safety team mentioned that they run this campaign every December. Sadly, the numbers show that drink and drug driving tends to spike during the holidays.

He emphasized that the results are telling, with many drivers suspected of being under the influence. It’s a serious issue, and he pointed out that there’s really no excuse for taking such risks.

Not only can it ruin your life, but it can also affect many others. If you suspect someone of driving under the influence, you can report it to Northumbria Police through social media or their website.

If you can’t reach them that way, just call 101. And in emergencies, don’t hesitate to dial 999.
