London: So, guess what? TfL just rolled out 4G and 5G on the Northern Line! That means you can now browse the web or make calls while zooming through the tunnels. Pretty cool, right?
This upgrade covers the stretch between Clapham North and Balham, plus a few stations like Oval and Clapham Common. It’s all about keeping Londoners connected, especially with the holidays coming up.
All the major mobile networks—Three UK, EE, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2—are in on this. It’s part of a bigger plan to make sure everyone can stay connected while using public transport.
And it’s not just for passengers. TfL staff will have better connectivity too, which helps keep everything running smoothly. Plus, they’re setting up a new Emergency Services Network to help first responders get crucial info in real-time.
They’re not stopping here, either. TfL is working on bringing high-speed coverage to the entire Tube network, including the Docklands Light Railway and the Elizabeth line. So, you can expect even more coverage soon!
Recently, they also launched coverage on the Bakerloo line between Piccadilly Circus and Embankment. More stations on the Piccadilly and Victoria lines will get the same treatment in the coming months.
The Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, mentioned how this is a great step for Londoners to stay connected, especially during the festive season. It’s all about making life easier for everyone.
Shashi Verma, TfL’s Chief Technology Officer, is excited too. He said they’re working hard to roll out more coverage quickly, so you can stay in touch while traveling around the city.
So, if you’re hopping on the Tube, you can now enjoy browsing, streaming, or just catching up with friends and family without losing connection!
TfL is also encouraging everyone to report any incidents on the Underground by texting British Transport Police. Just remember, in an emergency, always call 999.
They’ll keep working on expanding mobile coverage through 2025 and 2026, focusing on areas outside Central London and some tricky spots on the Circle and District lines.
