Halifax: Community leaders in Northern Canada are really worried. The ongoing postal strike is cutting off supplies of necessities, and kids might miss out on Christmas gifts this year.

Barry Andersen, the mayor of Makkovik, shared that many northern communities rely on Canada Post for everything, from packages to medications and even diapers. There aren’t any courier services available.

He mentioned that sending small parcels by plane from Happy Valley-Goose Bay can cost more than the actual gift inside. Plus, the ferry service to Makkovik is about to wrap up for the season.

Natan Obed, who represents 70,000 Inuit, pointed out that every day the strike goes on makes life tougher for remote communities. Elders aren’t getting their pension cheques, and some folks have had to fly south just to get their medicines.

With the strike now in its 25th day, Andersen fears that many kids in these northern areas might not get the Christmas presents they were hoping for.

Federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon stated that the Liberal government won’t step in, believing that negotiated agreements are the best way to resolve the issue.
