ALBUQUERQUE: A nonprofit in Nob Hill is in a tough spot and might have to close its doors. The Black Cat Community and Cultural Center has been around for about four years, but financial issues are piling up.
This center has been a creative hub for families since it opened in 2020. It offers dance, theater, and music programs, often at little to no cost. Many folks in the community say it’s been a lifesaver during tough times.
One young dancer, Presley Piatt, shared how much the center means to her. She feels like everyone there is family, and it’s a place where creativity thrives. Another student, Natalia D’Elia, talked about how the center helped her cope after losing her dad during the pandemic.
But things haven’t been easy. The center has faced maintenance issues since it opened in the old Hendren building, which has made it hard to keep up with rent. The director, Eugene Pickett, mentioned they owe back rent and need funds to keep the center running.
Right now, their performances are on hold, and they’re hoping the community will step up to help. They’ve raised $5,000 so far but need $16,000 to get back on track. If you want to support them, check out their Facebook page for more info.
