Newmarket: The organiser of the community awards, Alan Shand, had a close call while cycling on Monday. He was knocked off his bike by a car on Snailwell Road around 3 PM.
At 69, Alan suffered some serious injuries, including a head injury and a fractured spine. Thankfully, Martin Gear, a local, was one of the first to help him.
Martin saw Alan on the ground and couldn’t believe it was him. He quickly jumped into action, using a towel from his car to stop the bleeding from Alan’s head.
Emergency services arrived soon after, with the East Anglian Air Ambulance landing nearby. Alan was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for treatment.
Martin was worried but relieved he could help. He even contacted Alan’s wife, Christine, who’s a maths teacher and has worked with him on the community awards.
Christine later learned from police that Alan was very lucky to survive the accident. He was out cycling to prepare for an ultra-marathon in Scotland this May.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t wearing a helmet and didn’t have his phone, which made the situation even scarier. If it weren’t for Martin, they might not have known what happened.
Now, Alan is back home in Heasman Close, recovering from his injuries. It’s a relief to see him safe after such a frightening experience.
