Newcastle City Centre Roadworks to Cause Diversions Starting Next Week
Newcastle city centre will see diversions as roadworks begin on Worswick Street, affecting traffic and access for several weeks.

Newcastle: So, guess what? Starting next week, there are going to be some roadworks in the city centre. Worswick Street is getting a makeover, and it’s going to be closed off completely between Pilgrim Street and Carliol Square. This is all happening because Newcastle City Council and Northern Powergrid are teaming up for some important work.
They’ll be doing some kerb work and putting in ducts at the junctions. The closure is set to last until March 2, so if you’re driving through that area, you’ll need to find another route.
Don’t worry, though! They’ll have signs up to help you navigate around. You can still get to Carliol Square via John Dobson Street and Carliol Street. Emergency vehicles will still have access to Worswick Street when it’s safe to do so.
Pedestrians can still walk through Worswick Street, but cyclists should either follow the diversion signs or hop off and walk their bikes through the area.
Cllr Juna Sathian, who’s in charge of Climate and Transport at the council, mentioned that these works are part of a bigger plan to improve the highways in the city. There’s a lot happening around Pilgrim Street, including a new HMRC building that’s going to bring loads of jobs to the area.
They’re trying to coordinate with other projects to keep disruptions to a minimum. Plus, they’re also working on new paving, better pedestrian crossings, and a two-way cycle lane on Pilgrim Street, Market Street, and Mosley Street. Most of this work should wrap up by March 2025.
