Greater Manchester: The New Year kicked off with a bang, but not the fun kind. Over 1,300 people had to be evacuated due to serious flooding. It was a major incident, and things got pretty chaotic.
Heavy rain started pouring on New Year’s Eve and didn’t let up. By the time the sun came up on January 1, many homes, shops, and even parks were underwater. Some areas got hit with over three inches of rain in just 24 hours!
Rivers overflowed, and roads turned into rivers themselves. It was wild! Emergency services were on high alert, with 72 flood alerts issued. By the evening, some were still in effect.
People were stuck in their homes and hotels, and cars were left abandoned in the floodwaters. In places like Didsbury and Stockport, the situation was especially bad. Emergency shelters popped up to help those affected.
Rescue teams were out in full force, using boats to save people trapped in their apartments. In Stockport alone, around 400 people were rescued from one building, and another 500 from a hotel. It was all hands on deck!
Power outages were also a big issue, with thousands left in the dark. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, but it was a stressful time for many.
One woman, Isabella, shared her experience of waking up to find her apartment flooded. She described it as “really scary” and mentioned how firefighters had to help everyone out. It was a real mess, but the rescue teams were amazing.
In Didsbury, a hotel had to be evacuated, and many families were left scrambling for safety. The water rose so quickly that it caught a lot of people off guard. It was a tough start to the year for many.
Even nightclubs in the city had to shut down as the waters rose. It was a night to remember, but not for the right reasons. The community is coming together to help those affected, and hopefully, things will get back to normal soon.
