London: Exciting news for commuters! Artists are gearing up to enhance the daily grind for folks using the London Underground. Starting in 2025, four major artworks will pop up at Waterloo and Brixton Tube stations.

Transport for London (TfL) just dropped the details, and it’s all part of the Art on the Underground program, which is celebrating its 25th birthday this year. How cool is that?

In the spring, keep an eye out for a big piece by Ahmet Öğüt at Stratford station. Plus, a new pocket Tube map will showcase a design by Agnes Denes, inspired by her famous work, Map Projections.

Then, from June 30 to July 13, commuters at Waterloo will get to enjoy a new audio piece by Rory Pilgrim. It’s designed to be heard while you’re on the moving walkway connecting the Northern and Jubilee lines. Sounds like a nice way to brighten up the commute!

Rory Pilgrim, who was nominated for the Turner Prize this year, mixes music, performance, and art to reflect on community and social change. It’s all about connecting with the people passing through.

Later in November, Brixton station will welcome a new painting by Rudy Loewe. Their work often gives a voice to stories that have been overlooked in history, which is pretty powerful.

Loewe’s style is vibrant and graphic, pulling from their background in comics and illustration. Their new piece will be part of the Brixton Mural Programme, celebrating the area’s rich mural history.

Justine Simons OBE, the deputy Mayor for Culture, shared how Art on the Underground has turned the Tube into a public art gallery. It’s all about making art accessible to everyone traveling through London.

Since its launch in 2000, the program has featured works from many talented artists, and this new lineup is sure to keep that tradition alive. Eleanor Pinfield, the Head of Art on the Underground, emphasized that these new pieces will reflect both the present and the future of London.
