Salford: Exciting news for students! There’s a plan for a new block with nearly 400 homes, complete with a gym and lounge. Sounds pretty cool, right?
They want to knock down the old Cumberland House on Lissadel Street to make way for this new student residence. It’ll have 396 studios and some shared spaces, all just a short walk from Salford University.
They’re also planning some nice landscaping to create quiet spots and social areas. Plus, they’ll include heritage stones to honor the area’s history, with paths that resemble old railway tracks.
The building will have a welcoming entrance and a cozy lobby, along with a courtyard, staff room, and laundry. Interestingly, there won’t be much parking for cars—just a couple of drop-off spots and accessible bays.
But don’t worry, there are nearly 200 bike parking spaces! And it’s super convenient for students since it’s close to Salford Crescent train station and bus routes to Manchester.
Right now, Cumberland House is a taxi rank and MOT garage, but it’s time for a change. This new plan fits perfectly with Salford’s growing student population and the university’s expansion plans.
There’s also a massive £2.5 billion regeneration project happening around Salford Crescent, which will bring new homes and facilities to the area.
And if that’s not enough, they’re looking to replace some old high-rise blocks from the 1960s with new student housing that will have 1,500 rooms! The council will decide on the Cumberland House application in April.
