Cardiff: A fresh recycling system is on its way to homes across the city. The council kicked off a trial in 2022, introducing a ‘sack-sort’ method. This means folks will sort their waste into different sacks and boxes before collection.
Starting January 20, the final phase will roll out to 36,400 homes in areas like Butetown, Canton, and Riverside. Residents in these neighborhoods will get their new recycling containers, with collections beginning on March 4.
There’s also a plan for purpose-built flats, but details will come later. Some residents aren’t thrilled about the new system, citing storage issues and concerns about sacks blowing away on the street.
Despite the complaints, the council believes this method will cut down on contamination. They say 96% of what’s collected can be recycled, compared to just 70% before. It’s a big improvement!
Cllr Norma Mackie, who oversees waste management, mentioned that this rollout aims to help everyone recycle more effectively. She’s seen great results in areas where the scheme is already active and appreciates residents for adapting quickly.
One problem with the old system was that food waste often ended up mixed with recyclables, causing a mess. Now, the contamination rate has dropped significantly, which is a win for everyone.
The new containers include a blue caddy for glass, a red sack for metals and plastics, and a blue sack for paper. Residents will also receive a guide to help them get started.
To prevent sacks from blowing away, the council has added extra weight to them. If anyone needs more sacks, they can easily request them through the council app.
There were some hiccups last year when it looked like separated recycling was being mixed up again. The council reassured everyone that this wouldn’t affect the quality of what’s being recycled.
They’ve got a system in place to keep everything sorted at their recycling facility, ensuring that materials are collected properly. It’s all about making recycling easier and more effective for Cardiff residents!
