Kempsey: The family of Lewis “Buddy” Kelly is still searching for answers about his death. It’s been a long and painful journey since they decided to exhume his body.

Buddy was just 16 when he was found dead on railway tracks back in December 1983. He had big dreams, like playing tennis overseas, and had just bought a car. But then tragedy struck.

At the time, there was no autopsy, no blood tests, and not many witnesses. His death was quickly labeled as accidental self-harm due to drunkenness, which his family finds hard to accept.

After years of pushing for answers, they finally had his grave exhumed in 2020. But now, four years later, they still don’t know what the autopsy revealed.

Monica Kelly, Buddy’s younger sister, expressed their frustration, saying they need answers urgently. It’s been over 41 years since they lost him, and the waiting is unbearable.

Recently, they met with the court and learned that the Crown Solicitor’s Office is reviewing new evidence. The family believes this could lead to more than just a new inquest.

Monica is hopeful for an arrest, saying the new information could make that possible. They feel neglected by the government, as they haven’t received updates in years.

Buddy was a vibrant young man with a bright future ahead. He had just gotten his learner’s permit and was excited about his new apprenticeship. The idea that he would have laid down on the tracks is hard for his family to believe.

Supporters, including Greens Senator David Shoebridge, have reached out to the coroner, urging them to investigate the new evidence quickly. They want to ensure the family gets the support they need.

The NSW Coroners Court hasn’t decided yet if they’ll reopen the case, but they’ve been in touch with the Kelly family to offer support. The search for justice continues.
