New phase of Grimsby Docks Kasbah area regeneration to begin

Grimsby: Exciting news for the Kasbah area! A new three-year regeneration project is kicking off to preserve its rich heritage. The local council has approved a fresh funding initiative to help restore buildings in this historic part of Grimsby Docks.

They’re putting £600,000 into grants for building repairs, with half of that coming from Historic England. The rest is matched by the council. Plus, there’s another £133,000 for managing the scheme, thanks to support from Historic England and the docks’ owner, ABP.

Council leader Cllr Philip Jackson is thrilled about this. He mentioned how the Kasbah is vital for the local economy and is seeing a revival. It’s great to see old buildings getting a new lease on life while supporting new businesses.

Back in 2017, the council made part of Grimsby Docks a conservation area, focusing on the Kasbah, which is a key part of England’s industrial fishing history. A year later, they launched a five-year Heritage Action Zone program to boost heritage-led projects in the area.

Previously, they had a grant scheme that helped renovate 24 out of 93 buildings in the Kasbah. Now, they’re already getting interest for new projects, including restoring traditional frontages on Fish Dock Road.

This new grant scheme will also help businesses and community groups set up workspaces. They can apply for funds for repairs and restoring lost historic features. The goal is to make the Port of Grimsby more appealing and eventually reduce the need for public funding.

David Walsh from Historic England emphasized that restoring historic buildings is crucial for revitalizing the docks. Andrew Dawes from ABP is equally excited, noting that they’re breathing new life into these historic structures while preserving the port’s heritage.

ABP is also offering support through rental holidays and other assistance for grant recipients. It’s all about creating a vibrant future while honoring the past!
