New Ohio Laws Taking Effect as the New Year Begins

Columbus: It’s a fresh start in Ohio with new laws rolling out. The minimum wage is up, and there are changes in schools regarding religious expression and bathroom use.
Starting this year, the minimum wage for non-tipped workers has jumped from $10.45 to $10.70 an hour. Tipped workers also see a bump, going from $5.25 to $5.35. This change comes from a 2006 amendment that ties wage increases to inflation.
Another big change is House Bill 214, which allows students to take up to three excused absences for religious activities. Schools can’t question the sincerity of these requests, but they can check with parents.
Then there’s House Bill 183, which kicks in on February 25. It requires schools to designate bathrooms and locker rooms based on the gender assigned at birth. This applies to public and private schools, as well as colleges.
Lastly, school boards have until July 1 to set up rules about cellphone use in classrooms. The goal is to cut down on distractions, but there will be some exceptions for students with special needs.
