North Vancouver: So, they just launched this new Canadian Navy ship called HMCS Protecteur. It’s a big deal because it’s been almost ten years since the last one with that name was in service.

The launch happened at Seaspan’s shipyards, and it was a bit rainy, but that didn’t stop the excitement. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was there, which made it even more special.

This ship is the first of two joint support vessels being built in B.C. The second one, HMCS Preserver, is on track to be ready by 2025. Pretty cool, right?

The last HMCS Protecteur had a rough end, taken out of service after a fire in 2015. It had a long history, serving for almost 46 years in various conflicts, including the Gulf War.

During the ceremony, Trudeau called it a “historic moment” and praised the workers who built the ship. He really emphasized how Canada is a great place for investment because of its hardworking people.

After the launch, Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee shared how emotional it was for the naval officers to see the name back in action. He mentioned the legacy of the original Protecteur and how proud they are to continue that tradition.

He also reminded everyone that being at sea comes with risks, like fires or floods, and they always need to be prepared for anything. It’s a tough job, but they’re ready for it.

The Protecteur is the fifth ship built by Seaspan under Canada’s National Shipbuilding strategy. These joint support vessels are super important because they help supply other navy ships with fuel, food, and ammo, letting them stay out at sea longer.

This news was first reported by The Canadian Press on December 13, 2024. Exciting times for the Canadian Navy!
