Birmingham: A new set of bin strike days is here. Starting tomorrow, February 4, over 350 bin workers will walk out. This action is part of a dispute with Birmingham City Council about job losses.
The strike days have increased. The next strike is now tomorrow instead of February 7. Unite the union announced that workers will strike for 12 days this month. March will see 13 more strike days.
Unite calls this a “line in the sand” for its members. The council claims it offered alternative jobs and retraining options. However, workers feel the cuts are unfair.
The dispute began when the council decided to eliminate a key job role in waste services. This role is linked to equal pay claims from other workers. The union argues that cutting this role will hurt workers financially.
Here’s the full list of strike dates: February 4, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 17, 18, 20, 25, 26, and 27. In March, strikes will happen on the 3, 4, 6, 10, 12, 14, 17, 18, 21, 25, 26, 28, and 31. There are also two strike days in April.
Unite warns that more strikes could happen if the issue isn’t resolved. The union’s leaders stress that the council must take responsibility for the situation.
BirminghamLive has reached out to the city council for comments. They have previously stated that affected workers were offered other options.
