These young chefs from Newark Vocational High School are really showing off their skills. They’re whipping up everything from shrimp to grilled chicken, and it’s impressive!
One of the seniors, Randy Vasquez, said cooking is like a language. You don’t need to say much; the food speaks for itself. How cool is that?
The competition is part of a reality series produced by Newark Public Schools, and the prize is over $10,000! Last year, students from the Newark School of Fashion and Design had a similar competition, so this is becoming a fun tradition.
Principal Karisa Neis-Lopez believes these experiences are super valuable. They help students prepare for college or whatever comes next. It’s all about learning to work under pressure and with others.
Luis Maldonado, a senior who got into the Culinary Institute of America, dreams of opening his own restaurant someday. Meanwhile, Shaddai Ramos loves cooking but wants to be a pediatrician instead.
Chef John Calache, their instructor, emphasizes that cooking is just one part of the lesson. He wants them to learn skills that will stick with them for life, no matter what career they choose.
“Newark Chops” is set to premiere next week, and you can catch it online starting Tuesday, January 14. It’s going to be a blast!
