Bury St Edmunds: A new family-friendly restaurant is what many locals want. A recent SuffolkNews poll revealed this after thousands shared their thoughts.
Over the past two weeks, residents suggested businesses for empty shops. The Bury Free Press Facebook page gathered ideas before creating a Google poll.
Mark Cordell, CEO of Our Bury St Edmunds Business Improvement District, welcomes new businesses. He believes the public can influence what opens in town.
He said they want more reasons for people to visit the town center. Hospitality and retail businesses are especially encouraged.
Mark noted that businesses see Bury as a vibrant place to set up shop. The second most desired option was an experience unit, like a trampoline park.
While Curve Motion is nearby, many want more options in the town center. Sneaky Links indoor golf course is for ages 18 and up only.
Sixteen percent of people want a John Lewis, while 15% prefer a home store like Lakeland. These stores would replace those that have closed.
Some residents, like Heidi Notley, think there are enough food venues. She suggested a cotton trader store for clothing and bedding.
Others echoed her thoughts, wanting stores like Lakeland and Whittards of Chelsea. They believe these shops would benefit the community.
Ginny Mulligan proposed an indoor market in the former Cornhill Walk shopping center. This idea resonated with nearly 13% of poll respondents.
She envisions a lively space with various stalls for local creatives. Cornhill Walk has been empty for years and needs revitalization.
Developer Knightspur Homes has plans for Cornhill Walk, including flats and commercial spaces. Previous plans were rejected, but new proposals are in the works.
West Suffolk Council reports a 7.9% shop vacancy rate, lower than the national average. Many prominent empty units include Giraffe and Frankie and Benny’s.
