Humberside: So, get this! In just two weeks, AI road cameras caught a whopping 849 drivers breaking the rules. It’s part of a big push to make our roads safer.
These smart cameras can spot if you’re using your phone or not wearing a seatbelt. During the trials in March and June, they recorded 533 folks without seatbelts and 301 using their phones while driving. Yikes!
What’s even more concerning? Two kids under 14 were caught in the front seat without seatbelts. That’s just not cool. Plus, 13 drivers were seen not controlling their vehicles properly.
These numbers came from a Freedom of Information request by motoring experts at Cinch. Humberside Police said they’ll keep using these cameras since the trial went well. They plan to roll them out sporadically throughout the year.
Ian Robertson from Safer Roads Humber called the findings “disappointing.” But he also pointed out that this tech is crucial for reducing accidents.
He mentioned they’re always looking for ways to make roads safer and prevent serious injuries. It’s a bit sad that so many people still choose to ignore the rules.
Ten police forces in the UK, including Thames Valley and Greater Manchester, are testing these smart cameras. Some are even attached to police cars, while others sit in trailers by the road.
Road safety experts are all for these cameras, believing they’ll help cut down on accidents. But there are some worries about how they’ll be used and if fines will be fair.
Simon Williams from the RAC said we need this tech to keep our roads safe. He gets that some drivers might feel like they’re being watched, but with so many streets, it’s tough for police to be everywhere.
So, it looks like these AI cameras are here to stay, and hopefully, they’ll help make our roads a lot safer!
