North York Moors: A new 4G mast is now live. It was switched on recently as part of a £184 million government project. This aims to improve digital access in both urban and rural areas. The goal is to boost economic growth and close the digital divide.

The new mast will provide full 4G service to areas like Helmsley, Harome, Great Edstone, and Cold Kirby. Previously, only EE customers could access 4G here. Now, all network users can enjoy better connectivity.

This mast is part of the Shared Rural Network. This initiative allows major operators like EE, Three, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2 to share one mast. It’s a smart way to expand coverage without building multiple towers.

The upgrade also enhances existing masts that only connected EE customers or emergency calls. EE manages the UK’s emergency network, ensuring vital services remain operational.

The project aims to extend 4G coverage to 280,000 more homes and 16,000 kilometers of roads. It also seeks to improve coverage in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Parks, benefiting millions of visitors each year.

Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant highlighted the importance of this upgrade. He noted that people in remote areas have struggled with poor signals for too long. The activation of 30 government-funded masts is a significant step forward.

Ben Roome, CEO of Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited, shared that since March 2020, 4G coverage has expanded significantly. The program will continue to enhance service in rural areas as more shared sites go live.
