London: So, here’s the scoop. Rail users are in for a bit of a hassle with some Greater Anglia and Elizabeth Line services over the next few weekends. Network Rail is diving into some engineering work on the Great Eastern and Southend lines.

This work is set to happen on weekends from January 25 to February 16. They’ll be replacing track, fixing drainage issues, and doing some general maintenance on the mainline between Witham and London.

If you’re planning to travel, it’s a good idea to check your journey with National Rail Enquiries or Greater Anglia before heading out on those weekends.

Oh, and just a heads up: buses will be replacing trains between Witham and Newbury Park tube station for the first two weekends. But don’t worry, trains will still run between Norwich, Colchester Town, Clacton, and Witham.

For the second two weekends, it’s the same bus replacement deal between Ingatestone and Newbury Park, while trains will keep running between Norwich, Ipswich, Clacton, and Shenfield.

On the weekend of January 25/26, buses will also replace trains between Southend Victoria and Newbury Park tube station, and between Southminster and Wickford. Elizabeth Line services between Stratford and Shenfield will see some changes too, with replacement buses running between Stratford and Romford.

Here’s a quick rundown of the weekends when this engineering work will take place:

  • January 25-26: Witham to London
  • February 1-2: Witham to London
  • February 8-9: Shenfield to London
  • February 15-16: Shenfield to London

This mainline is super busy, so it needs regular maintenance to keep everything running smoothly. Plus, it’s a major freight line, which means a lot of heavy goods are coming in and out of London.

With all that traffic, the track wears out faster, so maintenance teams need to get in there often to keep things in shape.

Lawrence Bowman from Network Rail mentioned that they’re planning important repairs to ensure trains run safely. They’re also improving track drainage to handle those intense rainstorms that can cause flooding.

Martin Beable, the managing director of Greater Anglia, added that this work is crucial for keeping the railway safe and reliable. They’ll have a rail replacement service running, so just make sure to check before you travel and give yourself a bit more time.
