Wareham: Residents protested outside the train station on Saturday. They opposed plans to close the pedestrian level crossing.

Currently, the only bridge over the railway has steps. This makes it hard for some residents, like parents with buggies and those with limited mobility, to use.

Network Rail wants to build a ramped bridge to replace the crossing. The crossing has been in use for 40 years and is set to close when the lease ends in 2038.

Local actor Edward Fox joined the protest and spoke passionately against the plans. The community is worried about losing access to the crossing.

In response, Network Rail promised to find a solution. They emphasized that closing the crossing is for public safety.

A spokesperson from Network Rail said they understand the community’s attachment to the crossing. They want to work together to find a safe and accessible solution.

They also mentioned that safety is their top priority. Previous attempts to find alternatives have not been supported by local authorities.

The crossing has had issues with misuse, leading to safety measures like electronic gates and attendants. These were funded by Dorset Council.

Network Rail and the Office of Rail and Road agree that a full closure is necessary for safety. An independent report supports replacing the crossing with a bridge that has lifts or ramps.

The council has had safety attendants and electronic gates at the crossing since 2009. This costs £120,000 a year, which is not sustainable.

Jon Andrews from the council said the current setup is not practical or financially viable. They need to find a better solution for the community.

He added that past discussions have taken too long, and it’s time to act for the safety of everyone crossing the railway.
