King’s Lynn: Just one night away from the toddler, and we’re off to find some luxury.
We drove about three hours from London to Norfolk, where we discovered Nest Farmhouse tucked away on a quiet farm track.
This place is set on a thousand acres of working farmland and features a converted barn with five king-size bedrooms and a restaurant run by the folks behind London’s Michelin-starred St Barts.
The Nest Farmhouse looks like an American farmhouse with its grey cladding and lovely balconies overlooking endless fields.
It feels super secluded, especially with the grass all frosted over in the chilly weather.
From our balcony, we could see a little pond nearby. In summer, guests can sip drinks by the water, but it’s way too cold for that now.
Instead, we cozy up in our spacious room, which has a fancy bathroom with a walk-in shower and a big bath.
After missing lunch on our drive, we ordered some soda bread and fried chicken to snack on. The chicken was so good, it reminded me of a gourmet KFC, making me even more excited for dinner.
The restaurant stretches along the building, with a comfy area by a roaring fire for board games and a dining space with big windows overlooking the grounds.
The menu is all about local produce, sticking to a ‘farm-to-plate’ vibe.
For starters, we picked the hand-dived Orkney scallop with swede and fermented chili, plus a lamb neck croquette with sauce gribiche.
The scallop was beautifully served in its shell on noodles, perfectly seared yet tender. The croquette had a nice crunch, balanced by the tangy pickle sauce.
For the main course, we went for pork with apple sauce and black pudding, along with the fish of the day, which was a fresh skate fillet with smoked mussel butter and braised leeks.
The pork was tender with crispy crackling, and the pickled Savoy cabbage added a nice sweetness. But the crispy garlic potatoes? They were the real star—so crunchy and just the right amount of garlic.
For dessert, we indulged in a spiced custard pot with chocolate bits and warm doughnuts. It was such a treat, and we felt lucky to just walk upstairs to our room afterward.
After a good night’s sleep, we were ready for breakfast with kipper, poached eggs, and French toast before heading back home.
We felt refreshed and ready to dive back into our usual routine of dinner at 6 and bedtime chaos.
If you’re looking for a longer getaway, The Nest is just a short drive from seaside spots like Hunstanton and the Sandringham Estate, plus about 30 minutes from Blakeney for seal spotting.
Rooms at Nest Farmhouse start at £200 a night, and they’re dog-friendly too. Check out more at https://nestfarmhouse.co.uk/
