Montrose: Neighbours are really upset about the redevelopment plans for the old rope works. They’ve filed a bunch of objections against the project.

This historic building, known as the ‘Old Ropey’ on Bents Road, used to be home to Montrose Men’s Shed. Now, it’s in the spotlight for a big makeover that includes a café, bakery, yoga studio, and hair salon.

People living nearby are worried about the narrow Bents Road. They think it’s just not safe for all the traffic these new businesses would bring. Angus MacAulay, a local resident, pointed out that visibility is terrible when trying to enter or leave the lane because of the high walls on either side.

He also mentioned that there’s no pavement, which could put pedestrians at risk. Plus, even though they want customers to park in the Mid Links area, there’s nothing stopping them from parking on Bents Road, which is already a tight squeeze.

Helen Donaldson, who lives right across from the access road, shared her concerns too. She’s seen cars struggle to get in and out, and her house has been damaged a few times. She thinks a bakery would be a bad fit, especially with early morning hours disturbing the peace.

Shirley Cheyne added that her wall has been damaged as well. She worries that with her driveway being so close to the road, a vehicle could easily hit her car while she’s trying to pull in or out.

Residents feel that Bents Road is too quiet and residential for five retail businesses. Angus Council will take a look at the application soon.
