Northumbria: Over the festive period, nearly 180 drivers were nabbed for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This was part of a major crackdown by the National Police Chiefs’ Council, with Northumbria Police lending a hand.

The operation ran from December 1, 2024, to January 1, 2025, and it really ramped up patrols on the roads. Officers were stopping more vehicles to catch those who might be driving impaired.

Out of those arrests, 98 were for alcohol, 39 for drugs, and 35 for being unfit to drive due to either. There were even three cases where drivers failed to provide a sample when asked.

Sergeant Glen Robson from Northumbria Police’s Road Safety team emphasized the importance of this campaign. He noted that the festive season often sees a rise in drink and drug driving incidents.

He said, “There’s really no excuse for taking such risks. You could ruin your life and others’ lives too. We urge everyone to plan ahead for a safe ride home after a night out.”

Robson also warned that those who gamble with their safety will be caught and face the consequences in court.

If you see someone driving under the influence, Northumbria Police encourages you to report it. You can reach out via social media, their website, or by calling 101. In emergencies, always dial 999.
