Navi Mumbai: So, there was this really touching moment when residents and activists came together to help a stranded juvenile Black-headed Ibis. It was found in a bit of trouble at the NRI Seawoods complex.
On Thursday morning, someone spotted the bird just hanging out by the entrance. These Ibises are actually listed as ‘Near Threatened’ by the IUCN, which makes this situation even more serious.
A local guy named Gaurav Goel was out for his morning walk when he noticed the bird looking pretty rough. It wasn’t moving at all, and he thought it might be injured.
Gaurav snapped some pics and shared them on social media, tagging the location so rescue folks could find it. He knew there were groups that cared about flamingos and wildlife, so he posted it there. It got a lot of attention really quickly!
Then, an animal activist who’s known for rescuing birds got the word. They contacted the forest department and rushed over to check on the bird. Sunpreet Sawardekar, the activist, said the bird was stressed and dehydrated but didn’t have any visible injuries.
They did their best to make the bird comfortable, giving it water, fish, and even some electrolyte water. At first, it seemed like the bird was getting better, but then, sadly, its condition took a turn for the worse.
Eventually, they took the bird to Cessna Veterinary Hospital. Sunpreet had a friend, Advika Bhagwat, help with the transport.
Despite all the care, the poor bird didn’t make it. The vets said it died from dehydration and diarrhea. They handed over the body to the Mangrove department in Ghansoli along with a death certificate.
