Nottingham: A family is frustrated after waiting almost six years for a trial. Two twin boys were robbed at knifepoint in 2019. Their mother feels the justice system has failed them.

Now, her sons are 21 years old. One is a law student, and the other is working. The mother reached out to the media after seeing reports about the backlog of criminal cases.

One son expressed that they feel disconnected from the process. He said it has failed them completely. The Ministry of Justice stated that delays were due to court scheduling and defense requests.

The mother, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared her concerns. She read about custody case delays and felt her family’s case would be pushed aside again.

She described the robbery. Two men attacked her sons in a dark parking lot. They took their money and phones, and one son suffered a knife wound.

Two suspects were arrested and pleaded not guilty in court. The trial was set for May 2022 but was postponed due to one suspect being in the hospital.

It was rescheduled for January 2023, then July 2023, and now March 2024. The latest postponement pushed the trial to March 2025. The family is devastated by the delays.

Six years have passed, affecting the entire family. The mother understands COVID-19 caused some delays but is frustrated by the long wait.

One son feels the ongoing uncertainty is holding him back. He said they have lost faith in the system and feel unsupported throughout this process.

The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the delays and is reviewing the criminal court system. They aim to speed up justice for victims and have added more court days this year.
