Mumbai: The BMC is really stepping up its game against illegal hoardings. They’ve noticed a surge in these unauthorized banners, especially with the elections coming up in 2024. So, they’re reaching out to political parties, asking them to keep their supporters in check.
It seems like every time they clear out these hoardings, new ones pop up almost immediately. The BMC plans to send letters to local representatives, reminding them to follow the rules. They want everyone to play by the book and avoid putting up any unauthorized ads.
Last year, they removed around 70,930 illegal ads, but despite alerting the police, no real action was taken against the offenders. It’s a bit frustrating, right? The BMC even drafted a new policy to tackle this issue, but it’s still not finalized.
A senior official mentioned that they’re trying to get printers to ask for permission before printing any ads for public display. They’re also appealing to local leaders, including MPs and party heads, to help curb these violations.
In a recent letter, the H / West ward reminded everyone about the rules against temporary ads on roads and footpaths. If any party wants to put up banners, they need to get the proper permissions and pay the necessary fees.
The Bombay High Court has also weighed in, reminding everyone about a 2017 ruling that restricts these hoardings. They’re serious about enforcing these rules, especially after seeing the illegal hoardings near the court itself.
Now, the BMC is making it clear: no one can put up ads without permission. If they do, they could face fines or even jail time. It’s a tough stance, but it seems necessary to keep the city looking tidy.
