Belfast: John Cooney, 28, was rushed to the hospital after a fight. He lost his Celtic super-featherweight title to Nathan Howells on Saturday night.

Promoter Mark Dunlop confirmed that John is still receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital. He was taken there after the fight for further care.

After the match, medical staff found John had an intracranial hemorrhage. He underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

John is currently in the intensive care unit, where the medical team is closely monitoring him. His family is understandably worried.

His mother, Tina, expressed that the family is “broken” but remains hopeful. She shared on social media that she will never give up on her son.

Tina wrote, “You are battling the hardest fight. You can do this, John.” She emphasized how much he means to the family.

The fight ended when John fell to the canvas after a body shot in the ninth round. He had plans to fight for a British title next.

John’s uncle also took to social media, asking for prayers and calling for a ban on boxing due to its dangers.

Sports Minister Gordon Lyons commented on the need for safety in sports. He expressed his thoughts for John and his family during this tough time.

He acknowledged that while boxing is a contact sport, safety measures must be prioritized to prevent such incidents.

Lyons suggested reviewing the fight footage to learn from this situation and improve safety for boxers in the future.
