Hythe: Dr Ann Kaplan Mulholland, the owner of Lympne Castle, is leaving the UK. She wants to avoid higher taxes due to upcoming changes in non-dom rules.

Dr Kaplan Mulholland and her husband, Stephen Mulholland, are moving to Milan. They plan to keep Lympne Castle, which they bought for £5.5 million in 2023.

Currently, they don’t pay UK tax on overseas earnings. But that will change in April. The couple is unhappy about this decision and feels they have no choice.

In Milan, wealthy individuals pay a flat tax of £166,000, no matter their earnings. Dr Kaplan Mulholland criticized Chancellor Rachel Reeves for the tax changes.

She expressed her frustration, saying she doesn’t want to leave but feels forced to. The couple hopes to return to England as often as possible.

Despite the Chancellor’s plans to ease some tax burdens, Dr Kaplan Mulholland believes it won’t attract investors. She feels the changes are not beneficial for the economy.

Previously, she even considered asking the King for independence for her estate. However, she realized it wouldn’t be legal.

The couple has invested around £15 million into Lympne Castle. They have plans for a bar, restaurant, and hotel rooms, along with a wedding business.

Filming has taken place at the castle, but there was a mix-up about its boundaries during a shoot last year.
