Memphis Shelby County Schools have called off all after-school events today as a winter storm approaches the area
Memphis, Tennessee, Winter Storm, School Cancellations
The weather folks have issued a winter storm warning, which means we could see some heavy snow, slippery roads, and really cold temps. Jermaine Johnson, the Strategic Communications Officer for the schools, mentioned that all practices and events are off for today, but YCare will still be open until 6 PM.
As of now, there’s no word on whether classes will be canceled tomorrow. It looks like the other school districts in the area haven’t made any announcements about Friday yet. However, Christian Brothers University has already said they’ll be closing their campus due to the weather.
When it comes to deciding whether to close schools for snow, travel safety is a big deal. If buses can’t safely pick up kids, that’s usually a sign to cancel classes. The districts really focus on making sure it’s safe for everyone to get to and from school.
Looking at the forecast, today’s high is around 38 degrees, with a low of 30. There’s a 90% chance of snow starting after midnight, and we might see about an inch of accumulation. Tomorrow, we could get hit with heavier snow, with new accumulation between three to five inches. It’s going to be a chilly weekend, so stay warm out there!
